Get to Know The Truck Tie Down Straps

When it comes to tie downs, you have to bear in your mind that there are totally different things, there are different kind of trucks, box truck, pickup truck, flatbeds, etc., they use similar or different tie downs, even for same kind of trucks, people probably will use totally different tie downs, say e track straps or plain ratchet straps for box trucks, so try to talk about generic tie downs is not a good idea, more specifically, we are going to talk about flat bed truck this time, because we can see those tie downs on the highway,

There are all kinds of loads on the flat bed truck, sometimes they just have to , the requirement for tie downs become complicated. We will introduce truck tie down straps exclusively, since the are popular tie down devices on flatbeds, and it should be the most popular tie downs on all trucks as well. .

For most flat bed trucks, truck winch and winch straps are what we usually use to tie down stuff, some trailers come with winches installed you only have to get winch straps. There is one thing definitely needed for truck winch and winch strap tie down combination, winch bar, which is the tool to help you control the cargo on the flatbed, since you can only tighten the winch straps through turning winch barrel, this only can be done by utilizing winch bars.

If your flatbeds come with winches installed, you only need to get some winch straps for most of your work, of course you still need to keep some chains, binders and ratchet straps handy. Winch straps with winches on the flatbed can be used to secure pallets, machinery, steel coils, concrete pipes etc., with 5400lbs working load limit and the protection of plastic corner guards these winch straps can tie down almost anything threw at them. Both flat hooks and wire hooks may be used on 2”, 3” and 4” winch straps, but flat hooks are more popular than wire hooks, you may see flat hooks on all size winch straps while wire hooks mostly on 2” straps. There are 2” and 4” winches and 2” and 4” winch tie downs, depends on different applications , the length of strap can be 20′, 25′, 27′, 30′, 35′, 40′ or more than 50 feet.

And here are most used tie downs: ratchet strap. Common wisdom indicates that the ratchet strap is assemblies of ratchet buckles and nylon or polyester webbing tie down strap, there are fixed end straps with ratchet buckles and loose end straps.

The ratchet strap earned it’s popularity by being the most flexible, adaptable and capable tie down devices , from passenger cars to eighteen wheelers , you can see ratchet straps anywhere cargo needs to be secured. The ratchet straps may have flat hooks, double J hooks, chain anchors, cloth loops or just plain straps at both ends, probably some special made ratchets have some other funny ends, say, D ring? Width of the ratchets measured from 1” to 4” and the length can be anything from inches to more than 50 feet, the ratcheting mechanism really has it’s advantage. On big rigs ratchet tie downs are the most used tie down devices for truckers , those flat bed trucks without winches installed will find ratchet straps pretty useful .

In order to purchase these tie down straps, you have the choice between local stores and online. Depends on different situation , sometimes purchase them locally is more appropriate , sometimes online deals are much more attractive. To help you make decision you need accurate and non altered information on the vendors, you can check out online forums, blogs and  opinion sites to figure all of these out before you go all in.

How the truck winches and winch straps work together on the flatbed trucks?

For flatbed trucks there is one thing which is essential , truck winch, when the flatbeds have winches installed, only winch straps are needed to tie down loads, and the truck winch can be welded on or slide in , and the winches usually have 2 sizes, 2” and 4”, and of course there are 2” & 4” winch straps which can be used with 2” and 4” winches respectively. Occasionally people are looking for  3” winch straps, which is not as popular as 2” & 4” winch straps but people have their use for them.

The concept of truck winches with winch straps are pretty straight forward, the component of both truck winch and ratchet that the tie down straps are inserted into for tightening the whole web tie down straps called mandrel, the mechanism to tighten the straps on truck winch is different than the self contained ratchets, you will need the help of winch bars to tighten the winch straps. The barrel across the winch body has holes at one end, a  gear at the other end, the part between the winch body is mandrel, just put the straps into it, when the brake on the gear is closed, the gear can only go one direction so you can tighten the straps one notch at a time, when you untie the strap, open the brake, turn the barrel the opposite direction to pull the  strap off the load. In order to secure your load with winch straps, you will need winch bar to turn the barrel, there is no way you can operate the winch by hand, it’s not only not safe, but also not legal.

There are a few different kind of winch bars available, usually you will be able to find following winch bars at any store: standard winch bars, usually painted black, chrome standard winch bars, chrome combination winch bar and chrome combination winch bars painted half yellow. To be honest, all these winch bars are serving the exact same purpose, and it’s all about personal preference and sometimes people choose combination winch bars for specific reasons, one of them being that you can use something else with the combination winch bar, thus the word “combination” in the name.

The Assemblies of Ratchet Straps: put Ratchet Buckle and Tie Down Webbing together

The ratchet straps we usually say is the assembly of straps and ratchet buckles, also known as ratchet tie down. Usually people use nylon or polyester webbing to make the straps  , and the working load limit can range from a few hundred pounds to thousands of pounds , the width should be  1” to 4” , usually we can see hooks, loops or chain extension at both ends of the assembly .

The material people use to make ratchet buckle is steel, specifically carbon steel, but the ratchet handle can be aluminum or plastic coated, or just the steel . Usually we will see all kinds of ratchets, such as long handle, short handle, wide handle, long and wide handle and some special handles, people choose the most appropriate ratchets for their jobs, and this is another reason why ratchet strap are so popular, because the possibilities are almost unlimited!

According to WSTDA, tie down straps are made of nylon or polyester webbing, people choose different ratchet straps for different applications, nylon webbing has better elongation than polyester one, so it’s used when shock absorption is required , such as motorcycle tie down, when low elongation and  low creep are desired , polyester will be the choice , tie down heavy equipment will require polyester webbing tie down straps .

Coated with suitable material, we can alter the characteristics of the webbing , we can make more abrasion resistant, seal the straps to prevent corrosion, increase ultra-violet light resistance, increase or decrease coefficient of friction and more .

Last but not the least, the quality of the straps is the critical characteristic, to properly and safely use the ratchet straps is imperative. Now how to find these straps with quality and low price? Specialty stores will have almost all the straps you may need, and you probably are familiar with the people as well as the products in the store, and you don’t mind to pay a little premium for the service and quality. Actually there is a better way to acquire these straps, you guessed it, online stores are probably the best place to find wonderful deals, not most of the time but you will always find what you need, maybe not exactly but it will be close, and you may find some websites are pretty helpful in this regard, such as Trucker’s Deal, you will find extremely useful information about tie down stuff.

Inside the Semi Trailer: E Tracks and Tie Downs

The popular tie down system on semi trailers are E track tie down system, which consists of E Tracks and e track tie downs, E tracks come in with a few different length, such as 2′, 5′ and 10′, and there are two different setups , horizontal and vertical. E Track tie downs have some varieties, there are e track cargo bars with e fittings at both ends, ratchet e track straps, cam buckle e track straps, rope tie offs, wood beam sockets, they all have e fittings at the ends, and on the floor we have wheel chocks for stop vehicles from moving. Of course all of these need to have E Tracks installed and secured on the trailers, let’s see how do we do that.

When it comes to the installation of E Tracks, the safety is our first  priority.

When you mount the E Track you will have to look for the wall studs on the trailer, we will focus on doing it on the wall but the same principle applies to the floor as well. The wall stud is basically a big channel with a couple flat spots on top to attach the plywood to, we just have to do the same to the E Track and bridge two of them somehow, when you figure that out you can use screws to hold the E Track up, you will need deep threaded wood screws or tec screws to get the job done. Basically this is all about installing E Tracks on the wall, and you will have to make sure the E Track sit as flat as possible on the wood. For Safety reason, you’d better use deep threaded screws, put one screw into each hole on the e track, and run the track as possibly far as you can, the will spread the load across long distance and it’s safer. Remember that the there are only about 2 inch to outside wall, so don’t over assert the screws.

Before you call it a day, you will have to test your installation out a bit, just put a rope tie off in the e track, use your hand or some other stuff to drag it hard to see if there are any cracks or easily spotted loose ends, if you do find problems please fix them before hitting the road.

Heavy duty tie downs: transport chains and load binders

Binder Chains and ratchet chain binders are tough truck tie downs, both chains and binders are made of carbon steel, compare to tie down straps, the chains and binders have higher working load limit , say we compare grade 70 size 5/16” binder chain(which has 4700lbs WLL) to WLL 3333lbs 2” ratchet tie down straps ,  3/8” WLL 6600lbs binder chain vs. 4” WLL 5400lbs tie down straps , you can see  that the chains are much stronger, and the load binders are even stronger than same size chains, 5/16”-3/8” load binder(lever or ratchet type) has WLL of 5400lbs and 3/8”-1/2” binder has WLL 9200lbs. Another reason chains and binders are considered heavy duty, is their design factor is 4:1 while webbing tie downs have 3:1 typical design factor, see “Design Factor” for reference .

The material recommended by National Association of Chain Manufacturer to make grade 70 chains is carbon steel, the criteria for base steel is Carbon 0.35% max; Phosphorous 0.040% max and Sulfur 0.050% max. As long as the choice made by chain manufacturers meets the recommended criteria and the final products meet or exceeds DOT requirements(or CHP, California Highway Patrol, or some other mandated requirements), we can use these products for transportation purpose and don’t have to worry about inspections.

We use these heavy duty chains and binders to haul heavy equipment, for instance, backhoe, bulldozer, forklift, these big rigs are tough or straps, we have to use steel chains to tie them down , when we talk about backhoe, forklift, we need at least 3/8” grade 70 chains and binders to secure them, for something which has less weight we consider 5/16” chains are good fit, of course we still have 1/2” and up chains and binders, these chains will most likely be used to tie down something out of ordinary, such as battle tanks, or some other applications require super heavy duty chains.

Grade 70 tie down chains can be used on anything but overhead lifting, you need at least grade 80 alloy chains for overhead lifting. We see people use transport chains to drag the trees, tow the docks, and to tie down the logs out of the the trees, you can go around to find more creative uses of these chains and binders.

Tie Down Straps for 18 Wheelers

Truck tie downs mean a lot different stuff to different people, we will focus on 18 wheeler tie downs in our discussion, specifically, we are going to talk about flat bed truck this time.

Since people put all kinds of stuff on the flat bed truck, just because they can or they have to, the requirement for tie downs can be pretty complex.

We are going to discuss truck tie down straps solely.

Portable winch and Winch Strap.

Some flat beds come with weld on winches installed, not all trailers have winches installed . When the flat bed have the winches installed, we can use winch straps to tie down articles on the trailer, usually we tie down steel coils, concrete pipes, skids, anything that not too heavy for the 5400lbs working load limit. Winch straps usually come with flat hooks, because we usually hook the straps on the edge of the flat bed, of course the wire hook can be used too. There are 2” and 4” truck winches and 2” and 4” winch straps, depends on different needs, the strap length can be 20′, 25′, 27′, 30′, 35′, 40′ or more than 50′.

Now lets look at ratchet straps:

Ratchet strap is most used tie down devices because of their adaptability, you can put them almost anywhere when it’s applicable. The ending comes with quite some varieties, flat hooks, wire hooks, chain extensions, snap hooks, endless and more. And it’s width can be 1” through 4”, length can be a few inches to more than 50′. On commercial trucks ratchet tie downs are the most popular tie down devices for shippers, those flat bed trucks without winches installed will look at ratchet straps seriously.

In order to purchase these tie down straps, you have the choice between local stores and online, depends on different situation, sometimes purchase them locally is an good idea, sometimes online deals are much more attractive.
